Mechanism
Basement membrane
The basement membrane is the sheet-like structure about 0.1μm thick existing between epidermis and dermis. In addition to the physical connection of the epidermis and dermis, the basement membrane is responsible for controlling interaction / crosstalk via chemical mediators.
UV damage of the basement membrane negatively affects both the epidermis and dermis, resulting in lowering moisturization and barrier function as well as affecting wrinkle formation / promoting wrinkle formation.
